What’s New with TAC’s Technology Council

This is one of several articles profiling the in-person Fall Technical Meetings of TAC’s six councils and their committees that took place September 20-22, 2024.

TAC’s Technology Council had 33 attendees at its fall meeting.

Guest presentations

The Council heard presentations from the University of British Columbia’s David Michelson on traffic data and decision-making and from Transport Canada’s Marc Vanderaegen on the future of drones and advanced air mobility in Canada.

Technical projects

The Council continues to seek funding for a project that will study considerations for road authorities related to the use of micro-utility devices in public rights-of-way.

Committee updates

The Council received updates from its three committees.

The Connected & Automated Vehicles Integrated Committee meeting drew 25 participants who received a presentation from AECOM on CAVs and external inputs. They also discussed updating TAC’s inventory of Canadian CAV initiatives and reframing the committee’s work plan.

The Digital Applications Committee meeting had a total of 17 attendees. The committee discussed its work plan, adding artificial intelligence and data visualization tools to its priority topics. The committee also received presentations on legal issues related to digital twins, and digital applications for material approvals.

The Intelligent Transportation Systems Committee meeting attracted 23 attendees who discussed ITS planning and deployment, cybersecurity, and emerging technologies. They also heard presentations on ITS and life safety systems in highway tunnels from Don Mclean and on Transport Canada’s cybersecurity communities of practice from Jonathan Parent.

Each committee also reported on its discussion of issues in its domain that involve or impact Indigenous peoples.
