The Transportation Association of Canada (TAC) has launched a project to develop the Road Safety Guide for Canada (RSGC), a major publication that will complement the Geometric Design Guide for Canadian Roads (GDG) and the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices for Canada (MUTCDC).
The world of road safety has shifted in the past 20 years in response to climate and energy concerns and changes in technology, culture, and economic conditions. The RSGC will account for these changes, focusing on engineering aspects while referencing the multi-disciplinary nature of road safety. It will represent TAC’s third flagship document alongside the GDG and MUTCDC, and will:
- Consolidate, update and expand the content of TAC’s Canadian Road Safety Engineering Handbook (CRaSH), a series of seven publications developed over the last two decades
- Address gaps in TAC’s existing road safety guidance, and reference other Canadian and international road safety guides and practices (e.g. PIARC, AASHTO, Austroads)
- Focus on engineering in both rural and urban conditions, while also linking to strategic and policy issues (e.g. Vision Zero, Safe System Approach, equity), management concerns (e.g. governance, funding), and analytical tools (e.g. network screening, road safety audits)
Development of the RSGC will be enabled by the funding and expertise contributed by a wide range of project partners, each of which is represented on the Project Steering Committee. Members of that committee will help to select a consulting team and then guide its technical work – a great opportunity to contribute to road safety in Canada. TAC’s partners include:
