January 30, 2025

This is one of several articles profiling the in-person Fall Technical Meetings of TAC’s six councils and their committees that took place September 20-22, 2024.

TAC’s Safety, Design & Operations Council welcomed 45 attendees to its fall meeting.

Guest presentations

The Council heard presentations from: City of Vancouver’s Rachel Magnusson and Winston Chou on transportation and public space planning and implementation; and British Columbia Ministry of Transportation and Transit’s Brigid Canil and Bryan Crosby on strategic investment fund pilots and resiliency and criticality mapping.

Technical projects

The Council continues to solicit funding for a project that will update the Canadian Roundabout Design Guide.

Committee updates

The Council received updates from its four committees.

The Geometric Design Committee meeting attracted 55 attendees. It featured presentations on the Fraser Valley Highway 1 corridor improvement program and on safety considerations for tunnel cross-section design. Notable discussions included adaptation to climate change, road design training, cost of work, digital delivery risks, and intersection approach sight triangles.

The Road Safety Committee meeting involved 60 participants. The Committee heard presentations on micromobility safety, wildlife underpasses, functional design using Vision Zero principles, and health data for decision making. It also conducted discussions on Truth and Reconciliation, active transportation, and fatal crash trends in 2024.

The Small Municipalities Integrated Committee meeting was attended by 15 participants who reviewed outcomes from a lunch and learn event on speed management in small municipalities. They also discussed the sustainability benefits of roundabouts.

The Traffic Operations & Management Committee meeting attracted 68 participants and addressed roughly 25 ongoing volunteer projects to further applications, practices and devices that feed into TAC’s Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices for Canada.

Each committee also reported on its discussion of issues in its domain that involve or impact Indigenous peoples.
