What’s New with TAC’s Mobility Council

This is one of several articles profiling the in-person Fall Technical Meetings of TAC’s six councils and their committees that took place September 20-22, 2024.

TAC’s Mobility Council had 33 attendees at its fall meeting.

Guest presentations

The Council received a presentation from Alta Planning + Design Canada on TAC’s recently completed project on shared micromobility services in Canadian communities and approved the final report for publication. It also heard a presentation from Cary Bearn of the National Association of City Transportation Officials (NACTO) on the new Urban Bikeway Design Guide.

Technical projects

The Council approved a new pooled-fund project that will develop a synthesis of practice on active transportation facilities at interchanges.

Committee updates

The Council received updates from its four committees.

The Active Transportation Integrated Committee meeting attracted 60 attendees, who received a presentation from the University of British Columbia, researchers about unlocking the cycling potential of suburban communities. They also discussed the impacts of inflation on active transportation facility costs, and rethinking the trade-offs between network design and complete streets.

The Mobility Management Committee meeting welcomed 12 attendees. The committee received a presentation from Alta Planning + Design Canada on TAC’s shared micromobility services project and discussed future work plan elements.

The Transportation Finance Committee meeting’s 17 attendees heard a presentation from TransLink on work towards a sustainable transit funding framework. They also discussed cost estimation, scope changes, inflation and prioritization for major transportation projects.

The Transportation Planning Committee meeting attracted 32 attendees. The meeting included an update from the Modelling User Group and a workshop on the committee’s future priority focus topics and work plan elements.

Each committee also reported on its discussion of issues in its domain that involve or impact Indigenous peoples.
