GHD

Presentation starts 13:05

Realizing Road Intelligence Through Connected Vehicle Data: GHD + Compass IoT

GHD invites you to explore the potential of Connected vehicle data (CVD), an emerging technology that helps understand driver behaviour and infrastructure in real-time, to support Vision Zero across Canada. It aims to answer key questions on supporting vulnerable users, measuring speed management effectiveness, prioritizing maintenance, understanding mixed-mode environments, and allocating funds efficiently.

GHD is partnering with Compass IoT, a start-up that collects anonymized CVD from 30+ vehicle manufacturers, to provide real-time road intelligence. This data helps GHD develop scalable solutions for governments and transport agencies to better understand road safety risks and reduce road fatalities.

What is Compass IoT? Compass IoT is a software solution that empowers transport professionals to improve road safety, transport and infrastructure. It eliminates the frustration and complexity of hardware-reliant solutions by harnessing the power of vehicle-generated data directly from OEMs with real-time collection.

About the presenters:

Michael Collins, Transportation Market Leader – Ontario, has over 17 years of experience in transportation infrastructure planning for municipal and provincial road authorities. He understands the challenges road authorities face in prioritizing user safety within everyday operations. He is also a proud TAC volunteer, chairing the Connected & Automated Vehicle Integrated Committee and being a member of the Technology Council and the Joint Roundabout Sub-Committee.

Emily Bobis is a founding director of Compass IoT, a multi-award-winning Road Intelligence company that uses Connected Vehicle data to build better, safer transport and city infrastructure. Emily was also a finalist for NSW Young Woman of the Year 2022, winner of Women in Digital’s Innovator of the Year 2022, and a member of the Board of Advice for the ITLS at the University of Sydney Business School.

Collision Reduction Strategies for Rural Highway Intersections

Rural road safety is an issue of growing concern at major highway intersections. Associated Engineering has been the road safety auditor and/or road designer for safety improvements at numerous highway intersections with a pattern of serious and fatal collisions in Western Canada. The presenters will discuss solutions that were implemented and how well they are working, the types of countermeasures that are applicable to the rural highway context, the role of local enforcement and public engagement, and opportunities for strategic analysis at a system-wide level. Examples of Associated Engineering’s projects include the implementation of Saskatchewan’s first Restricted Crossing U-Turn, addressing the problem of habituation when introducing a new highway bypass, and other innovative solutions to improve safety.

About the presenters:

Monique Beaudry, P.Eng., RPP is Associated Engineering’s National Discipline Lead, Transportation Planning. She has significant traffic safety experience, including collision database management, systemic safety reviews, in-service safety reviews, road safety audits, and innovative safety projects. Monique particularly enjoys the many firsts she has been involved in, such as Saskatchewan’s recently constructed Restricted Crossing U-Turn.

Laurel Richl, M.A.Sc., P.Eng., PTOE, RSP1 is a Senior Transportation Engineer in Associated’s Vancouver office. She brings a unique mix of road safety, traffic engineering, planning and design experience that helps her look at projects holistically from start to finish. Laurel has completed in-service road safety reviews and audits throughout Canada, and is a member of TAC’s Geometric Design and Road Safety Committees.
