Two New Signs for Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices for Canada

Thursday, December 18, 2014

Two new signs recently received approval from the Chief Engineers' Council of the Transportation Association of Canada (TAC) for inclusion in the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices for Canada (MUTCDC).

The signs, intended to warn drivers about low ground clearance at railways crossings and water flooding on roadways, were approved as a result of TAC volunteer projects, under the guidance of the Traffic Operations and Management Standing Committee.

Low Ground Clearance at Railway Crossing Sign

The project objective was to add a sign in the MUTCDC to inform drivers of the potential to contact the ground or rails when crossing a railway. The volunteer project committee conducted a review of existing signs across Canada and the United States, including current practices with respect to their use. Based on comprehension testing results, the committee recommended that the warning sign ‘WA-51 Low Ground Clearance at Railway Crossing Sign’ be added to the Manual.

Water Flooding on Roadway Sign

The second sign, warning road users of a possible danger of water flooding on a road – ‘WC-50 Water Flooding on Roadway Sign’ – will also be added to the Manual. A review of existing signs and comprehension testing were conducted, which led to the recommendation for inclusion in the MUTCDC.  Both signs will also be added to TAC’s Sign Pattern Manual.

The material will be prepared by TAC’s Editing and Publication Subcommittee in the coming months.
